Class Work/Trabajo en clase

Last week, we wrapped up Social Studies and Science with wonderful presentations about Global Citizenship and our bridges. The students are very proud of their work! We also began working on creating our own math games based on what we learned this year that we will be playing on Wednesday as our Math Wrap up. In Spanish, we worked really hard on our obra de teatro (play) based on La Luz de Lucía (Lucia's Light), which was enjoyed by our Grade 1 buddies class, as well as the other Grade 3 classes. In English, we finished learning about similes and did a short mini story about our families using what we learned. This week, we will be creating a Grade 3 memory book to take home and share with our families.

As this is the final blog entry for the school year, I'd like to wish everyone a wonderful and safe summer break!

Dalhousie School News Updates

It was another exciting and busy week at Dalhousie school.

Inline Skating

The final week of inline skating has included exciting “disco” atmosphere where students were able to practice their skills in a roller-skating rink type atmosphere.  Many parents may have fond memories of going to Llyod’s Rollersports Centre back in the day – this week kind of reminded me of those days.  It was great to have Alien Inline here for the last 5 weeks and we are very pleased with the experience that our students had with inline skating.  We also are super thankful to all the parents who helped out during the various skating times.

Minecraft Challenge

We had an amazing Minecraft challenge spirit activity on Friday, June 23 with many students participating in virtual design challenges. They built some creative and cool objects, buildings, etc. during this challenge.

Teachers Vs. Grade 5 Soccer Match

The teachers vs. grade 5 soccer match was and exciting and energetic event on June 23 with lots of cheering, skillful play (mostly the students!), and outstanding sportsmanship.  The Grade 5’s won 3-1, but the most important part was that everyone had fun and enjoyed the event and the teachers were able to get a good workout in!

Dalhousie School News Updates

It was another wonderful week of learning at Dalhousie school with a couple of extra exciting events: the grade 5 Camp Riversedge field trip and the amazing family fiesta night!

Summer Weather Conditions

With the hot and sunny temperatures, we would like to remind everyone that hats, sun screen and water bottles are essential to ensure our students are safe, comfortable and happy during outdoor activities.  Please continue to send these items to school with your child(ren).

Grade 5 Field Trip – Camp Riversedge

What a great trip this was!  The weather was perfect and the students were such great representatives of Dalhousie school.  The day was filled with outdoor games, archery, a low ropes obstacle course, and even some quiet time to appreciate the natural area of tree groves, wetlands and the river bank.  We appreciate the support of the parent council who helped make this experience come to fruition.

¡Family Fiesta Night!

¡WOW! – The family fiesta night was incredible and so much fun! We had a fabulous turn out and it was such a joy to see all the positive energy that Dalhousie has to offer! It was something that our students will never forget. Thank you to all who attended and supported the playground fundraising portion of the night.  We would also like to make a huge shout out to all the parent council volunteers, the volunteer DJ, as well as the food trucks for making the evening so memorable. The fiesta would not have been a success without all of you.  When we work as a team, the strength of our community really shines and the Fiesta is a great example of this collaboration.  We are amazing Dalhousie!

Sports Day

Dalhousie students are excited about our upcoming Sports Day on June 28. We are looking for volunteers to run stations and in some cases, provide class support.  Check out all the fun opportunities available.  You must have a current CBE volunteer clearance.

Dates to remember

June 26 – Grade 5 Farewell Ceremony

In Math, we have been focused on finding the perimeter of various shapes (regular and irregular polygons). The students started a project about their "casa ideal" (dream house) that they are currently designing in order to find the perimeter. In Spanish, we have been using our acting skills to practice a reader's theatre version of "Los tres cerditos" (The Three Little Pigs). Then we will use what we've learned to do a reader's theatre interpretation of the book "La luz de Lucía" (Lucia's Light). In Social Studies, we are in our final unit, Global Citizenship, and students are researching an organization of their choice based on a list provided. Some choices on the list include Habitat For Humanity, One Drop, and Doctor's Without Borders. In Science, we will be beginning to build bridges next week! Students will be asked to bring recycled materials from home that they would like to use to build their bridges. Please have those materials in class by Wednesday, June 7th. Gracias! In English, students are now putting together poetry books using all the different types of poetry we've learned. In Wellness, we started creating art based on the bear, who represents courage in the Seven Sacred Teachings.

Dalhousie School News Updates

Inline Skating

As inline skating continues the students’ skills are quickly improving.  They are having so much fun and the instructor from Alien Inline is doing a great job programming with a balance of skill development and having fun while practicing their skating skills. Just a quick reminder to make sure students have socks with them or they may not be able to participate in the activity.

Grade 4 Field Trip to Heritage Park

The grade 4 students went to Heritage Park on June 1st.  It was a fantastic day of fun and learning about the history of the west, specifically the small prairie settlements that were abundant at the turn of the century throughout western Canada.  The students had a great day of learning.  Thanks so much to all the parents who volunteered for the day.  The students demonstrated great citizenship during this trip and were great representatives of Dalhousie school.

Grade 5 Fiesta Promotion

This week some of our grade 5 students teamed up with school council to promo the family fun night.  This was a great leadership opportunity for these students and they did a great job talking about the evening activities and how much fun it is going to be!

In Math, we had our fractions quiz on Tuesday and then moved on to perimeter. So far the students have learned what perimeter is (the total distance around a shape) and how to calculate it (adding up all the sides of the shape). Next week, we will continue to focus on this and how to calculate the perimeter when side lengths are missing. In Spanish, we are focusing on "La luz de Lucia" to prepare to do some reader's theatre with the book. In English, we learned about cinquains, diamantes and we got the chance to go outside on the school grounds for some nature inspired free verse poetry. In Social, we are wrapping up with Chapter 5 about the environments of Peru, Tunisia, India and Ukraine and next week, we will be starting Global Citizenship as our final unit. In Science, we started our testing labs and soon, we will be moving into our final project for the year. In Wellness, we've been talking about courage and will soon be starting our art in relation to the Bear. In PE, we've been working on our soccer skills and we had our first inline skating class on Friday. Next week, we will be focusing on frisbee skills.

Dalhousie School News Updates

A reminder that due to the Alberta Election on Monday, May 29th there is no school for students as many schools are being used as polling stations.

Inline Skating

The first week of inline skating has been awesome!  Thanks to all the volunteers who have been helping the younger students put on and take off their equipment.  The atmosphere during this activity is so positive with some music playing in the background while the students learn and practice their skating skills.

Arbour Day Trees

Every year grade 1 students are given a tree on Arbour Day.  This year we received more trees than we needed, so now that all our grade 1 students have received their tree, we are pleased to offer the rest of them to anybody who would like a tree or two (or more).  If you are interested, please email Rebecca (reconrad@cbe.ab.ca) with how many you would like.  There are about 20 trees to give away.

Coyote Sighting

We recently had a coyote sighting on the school grounds before school on Thursday morning.  The animal was not acting territorial and left immediately when school administration scared it off.  The city of Calgary has been notified and they told us that they have a city contractor in the area managing the situation.  They wanted us to let the community know that if you see a coyote in the area to call 311 and report it as this will help them determine how they monitor and respond to the situation.

Terry Fox Run Update

We received a letter from the Terry Fox Foundation to congratulate Dalhousie school for being the top Calgary based elementary school in fundraising this year. Dalhousie was also the 16th highest fundraising school in the entire province.  Thank you so much to everyone in our community for your generosity and support for this great organization.

Wildfire Smoke

To support the health and safety of our students and to minimize their exposure to the wildfire smoke, we will continue to restrict higher intense indoor activities as well as all outdoor activities when the Air Quality Index is rated  at a high health risk (7 or above). We make this decision based on the information and resources below:

We are encouraging students to stay extra hydrated during this time. Please ensure they are bringing their water bottle with them to school. If your student suffers from asthma or any other respiratory conditions, please make sure they have their puffer or other medication with them.

Dates to remember:

In Social, we continue to focus on Chapter 5 - People and the Environment. In Science, we continue to work on learning about structures, stability, materials and the strength of the triangle. Dalhousie School News Updates

We had another great week at Dalhousie school.

We would like to shout out to all the fabulous moms out there. We hope your Mother’s Day is full of pampering and love. We have such great students here at Dalhousie and it is the role of the mom that has instrumental influence on ensuring our children are loved, secure, curious, and happy.  Have a great Mother’s Day this Sunday!

Fancy Day

Today was Fancy Day, a school spirit day organized by our grade 2 students. It was great to see all the fancy clothes that the student dressed up in!

Playground Town Hall

What a great event our playground town hall was last night!  We even had some students fundraising by selling candy and lemonade to support our new playground. Thank you “LemonKrafts”! The three designs were shared and all in attendance had the opportunity to vote on their preferred design. With all the commitment and energy, we are confident that we will be able to have a fantastic new playground in the next couple of years.  Thanks for your support and thank you to parent council for organizing and sponsoring this event.

Yearbook update

This year’s yearbook is complete and has been sent to the printing press.  If you ordered a yearbook you should receive it by the third week of June.  After some careful thought, we decided that next year will be switching to Lifetouch for both school photos and our yearbook.  We believe that Lifetouch will better meet our needs.

Evaluation de la Lectura

All Spanish schools in Calgary have been assessing their student Spanish language reading levels throughout this school year.  We have just completed phase 3 and are moving on to phase 4.  Dalhousie students have shown steady improvement in their Spanish reading proficiency and when comparing our students to other elementary Spanish school students we are progressing at similar rates and slightly above the average in some areas.

Inline Skating

Inline Skating will be starting after the May long weekend.  The students are very excited for this experience! This is also a great opportunity for parent volunteers to support us with helping our younger students put on and take off their skates and safety equipment.  If you would like to volunteer for inline skating you can click on this link to sign-up using Sign-up Genius.

Lost and Found

As we approach the end of the school year we still have an abundance of misplaced and lonely items in our Lost and Found. We encourage students to check through these items on a regular basis but would love a parent’s keen eye to go through the items as well. Please feel free to visit the fully stocked Lost and Found at the doors near the field when you are at the school. Any items not claimed by the end of the year will be donated.

 Dates to remember:

May 22 – Victoria Day – No School

May 23 – Inline skating begins (runs until June 23)

May 29 – Non-Instruction Day – No School for Students

This list is certainly not inclusive and we will gratefully accept all donations! We are asking that items be brought to the school/arranged for pick-up by June 1st to allow us a week to prepare everything. There will be a bin to drop off donations in the office.

We are going to need a lot of volunteers to make this exciting night happen, so please take a look and sign up for a spot here
